    • ICT

The Information- and communications technology (ICT) sector is a combination of manufacturing and services industries that capture transmit and display data and information electronically; it is one of the fastest growing sectors in Rwanda. Currently contributing 3% to the GDP, the sector is projected to contribute about 5% in 2020. In addition, forecasts predict that up to 100.000 new jobs will be created in the ICT sector between 2015 and 2020, which means there is huge potential for growth in this sector. Named East Africa’s number one ICT nation by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the Government of Rwanda has adopted the Smart Rwanda Master Plan (SRMP) in 2015. This five-year ICT strategic plan seeks to transform the country from a low-income agricultural based economy to a service-orientated knowledge based society by the year 2020. Based on this goal the ambitious vision of Rwanda is to become Africa’s ICT Hub. Due to the huge potential for growth and employment and its key function as an enabler to raise the competiveness of other sectors, such as health, education, agriculture and finance, Eco-Emploi programme and its partners identified ICT as one of the four priority sectors. Currently, Eco-Emploi…

    • Creative Industries

Creative industry is one of the growing sectors in the global economy. It has the potential to create job opportunities, diversify exports and facilitate the development of other sectors and industries. The creative industry in Rwanda has recently grown in terms of the number of participating entrepreneurs as well as its contribution to the economy. The government of Rwanda has lifted cultural levies and introduced a law to promote the country’s audio visual and film industries. 70% of television broadcasted is to consist of national content. Since the introduction of the digital terrestrial television broadcasting standard in Rwanda in 2013, 18 new TV stations started, bringing the total number to 22 as of 2016. The new TV stations join the already vibrant radio land scape of approximately 50 regional and national radio stations. As of these developments in the last years a significant boost in the creation and the need of original local content emerged in the Rwandan audio visual sector. Based on this development, Eco-Emploi programme and its Rwandan partners identified the creative industries as one of the four priority sectors. The focus lies on the audio-visual sector with the option of entering further sub sectors. Interventions will focus…

    • Tourism

The Government of Rwanda has identified tourism as one of the key sectors that can spur the country’s economic development. Tourism has been growing at an average of 14% over the last 10 years and is now the largest foreign exchange earner for the country and has been identified in all major policy and planning documents as a key sector that could help Rwanda to achieve its economic development goals. Considering its success, tourism has been highlighted among the key priorities of the country’s economy. According to this, the EDPRS II has set an ambitious target of 25% annual growth in total tourism revenues. The sector revenues is planned to increase from US$ 281.8 million in 2012 to US$ 860 million by June 2018. Within the framework of the program Eco-Emploi program, GIZ, in collaboration with MINEACOM, has established a tourism core group of key actors from the private and public sector who support the upgrading of the tourism value chain. Despite the tourism sector performance in the last 10 years, the sector is mainly still faced with limited tourism products to keep tourists stay longer and faced with limited technical skills to satisfy the tourists. An added value into…

    • Wood Economy

The Development of the wood sector is one of key resolutions of the GoR 13th National Leadership Retreat and one of pillars for the success of Rwanda’s vision to attain a Middle Income Country status by 2020. The sector has the potential to generate substantial off-farm employment, increase exports, increase incomes and widen the tax base. To address existing challenges and unlock SME’s potential through increased competitiveness, Eco-Emploi programme is undertaking with differentpartners the task of developing a comprehensive action plan with key interventions aimed at enhancing the competitive of players within the wood sector.
