Increasing the competence in the hospitality sector through skills upgrading
The Workforce Development Authority (WDA) organized a training on culinary arts, food and beverages. Employees from big hotels, restaurants and motels in Rubavu district participated as well as graduates from tourism in TVET schools.
The two days training took place at Kivu Peace View Hotel from 22nd January to 16th February 2018. More than 30 participations sharpened their skills with a master trainer from Germany, Mr. Henrik Schellhoss on the topics of cooking methods and basic dishes, hygiene and food safety, food and beverage services and customer care to mentioned a few.The same training will be offered in Karongi for the same occupations.
The training came as a solution to the identified skills shortage in the Kivu belt region. A preliminary survey conducted with the support of Eco-Emploi Programme for hotels and restaurants pointed out major training needs in hospitality sector such as culinary arts and housekeeping, food and beverages and hospitality management.
The Kivu belt region has the potential to attract tourists and offers memorable experiences with beautiful landscape of mountains, forest and beaches. A professionalized service delivery will increase and maintain tourist visits in the region. The Rwandan German Development Cooperation is supporting the skills upgrading process through the Promotion of Economy and Employment Programme (Eco-Emploi).
